Located on Long Island Sound, Norwalk boasts the rich heritage of a New England waterfront town. South Norwalk, popularly known as "SoNo," is a restored old seaport with gas lit streets and brick sidewalks that beckon daytrippers and shoppers. The neighborhood, which is energized by a lively nightlife, is also home to the Norwalk Maritime Center, where visitors can explore the aquarium, watch an IMAX movie or take a seal-watching boat trip. The Norwalk Seaport Association offers boat trips from SoNo to Sheffield Island for tours of the historic lighthouse, and in September, the Seaport Association sponsors the Oyster Festival.
Visitors can stroll along the recently built river walk linking SoNo to Mathew Park, home to Lockwood-Mathews Mansion, the restored, 62-room, Victorian-era mansion, as well as the Stepping Stones Museum for Children, a hands-on science and technology museum that opened in 2000,
Local corporations provide a strong economic base and employment opportunities for the city as a whole. A multitude of residential options includes antique or contemporary homes on the water, large estates in Sasqua Hills and lovely colonials in the wooded Silvermine area. There are also many condominiums and small capes in neat, tree-lined neighborhoods.
